About the Team
Lawrence Technological University’s SAE Aero Design Team exemplifies the university’s approach of theory and practice, innovating our planes from the textbooks and into the air. Our team of eight senior mechanical engineering students is excited and prepared to design, construct, and test a radio-controlled plane fit to contend against top universities at the SAE Aero Design competition in May 2022. Throughout the project, we gain invaluable skills that span the scope of engineering like collaboration between team subsystems, management of team relations with vendors and other organizations, and the foresight and flexibility needed to deliver a high quality product under strict time constraints. This experience advances our foundations in good engineering practices, providing us with impressive skill sets at the threshold of our careers.
Plans for Design
The team has ambitious plans for this year’s design. Based on the competition rules, high lift, short wingspan, and short cargo bay reap the highest flight scores. The team is opting to build the first biplane in recent Aero Design team history. The team will use the knowledge gained in Fluid Mechanics, Aeronautical Engineering Fundamentals, Statics, and other courses along with the engineering design process to iterate the best result.
Support the Team!
Over the course of the academic year, the Aero Design team will design and construct up to five planes in preparation for the competition. Since each plane can reach $1,000 in material costs, we are asking for help raising funds for the materials necessary to iterate our design and bring a competitive plane to competition. Funds also help cover costs associated with transportation to the competition in Fort Worth, Texas. Any support you can give is much appreciated and will go a long way in helping us reach success. Thank you for your consideration in giving to the 2022 Aero Design team!
Covers 100 miles of travel between Southfield, Michigan and Fort Worth, Texas for the SAE competition.
Covers: Two batteries are needed to power the plane during flight. Donor Perk! - At this level, the team will place a small sticker decal of your name or company logo on our competition plane.
Covers: Gas from Michigan to Texas for all vehicles. Donor Perk! At this level, the team will place a medium sticker decal of your name or logo on our competition plane.
Covers: All material costs for one plane prototype. Donor Perk! At this level the team will place a large sticker decal of your name or logo on our competition plane.
